Composition Notes
In 2017, I set to work on a new composition for solo piano based on the hymn “Whiter than Snow” by James Nicholson (1828-1876). After the theme is stated, the rhythm, harmony & melody of the hymn are explored further through a set of five variations.
I had the privilege of performing this work in the presence of my first piano teacher, Clarisa Morrison, shortly before her death from cancer. It was the last time I would see her alive, and consequently I have dedicated this composition to her memory.
Seven years later, I decided to make an arrangement for full orchestra. Some minor changes were made to the music that differ slightly from the original piano score. The resulting composition takes the listener through all the various colours and timbres of each orchestral section, culminating in a grand finale.
