The Vulgard of Bonn

Composition Notes

When I was fourteen, I began writing a story set in 18th-century Bonn, Germany. It followed a boy who was emotionally & physically abused by those around him. In time, he fled the town that had broken him, vanishing into the world to escape his pain. But years later, he returned – no longer the helpless boy they once knew, but a man sharpened by knowledge, power, and a thirst for vengeance. Yet amid his darkness, a single light appeared: a young woman whose kindness disarmed him, whose compassion stirred something long buried within. What began as a story of hatred became one of grace – a journey from vengeance to forgiveness, and from ruin to redemption.

Though I never finished writing out the entire story, I instead decided to compose a piece for solo piano – hoping to capture the story’s sorrow, anger, and fragile beauty in sound. Three decades passed before I stumbled upon that forgotten score, like finding an old memory sealed in time. This time, I returned to it with new eyes, reimagining it for orchestra. The original themes remained – the same melodies and harmonies – but they grew deeper, more intricate & alive. And in a way, just as the boy once returned to his town transformed, I too returned to this music as a different man.
