Jesus, The Very Thought of Thee

Composition Notes

Composed in 2017, this work for solo piano is a reimagining of the hymn “Jesus, The Very Thought of Thee” by John B. Dykes (1823-1876). It started off as a piano improvisation based on the hymn, and then was later developed & refined further. The piece contains exactly six pages of “busy”, fast-paced music which is then followed by a entire page of calm, “restful” music. This contrast in the music symbolizes the six days of God’s creation followed by the seventh-day where God rested from His work.
