Winter Mist

Composition Notes

After winning first prize in the 1996 Jean Coulthard Composing Competition, the Victoria Conservatory’s Piano Summer School commissioned Michael Maw to create a new work for piano. This was the first commission Michael had ever received, and the resulting short piano piece which was composed on March 26, 1997. In it he tried to evoke the sensation of a cool mist floating through the air. Before beginning work on this piece, Michael did a short study of several songs by Debussy. The influence of impressionism can be seen in this work, which gives it a truly “misty” effect.
