Composition Notes
When I was 19, I began composing a new piece for brass quintet. I completed it on December 22, 1999, and gave it the title “Spectral Myths.” Not long after, several of my university friends gave its premiere performance. The work was dedicated to my close friend Tannis Guiboche (later Blacksmith), whom I had recently visited in The Pas, Manitoba. Over time, however, the title began to feel disconnected from the music itself – it didn’t quite capture the essence of what I had created. Twenty-four years later, I returned to the piece, renaming it “Outpost” and reimagining it as a full orchestral arrangement.
